The Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau was establish to investigate, prevent, regulate and oversee the management of aircraft accidents and incidents that occur in Ghana; and to provide for related matters.
The Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau is a centralized autonomous investigation institution whose operations will not be subject to interference. In the conduct of its investigations, it neither seek nor take instructions from any other authorities. The Bureau has unrestricted authority over the conduct of investigations. The Bureau is a separate legal entity in its operations but serves as an agency under the Ministry responsible for Aviation. The Bureau is responsible for initiating its own investigations, policies, programmes, projects and activities as well as develop operational guidelines, rules and regulations in line with international standards. The Bueau has developed mechanisms for ensuring the implementation of findings and safety recommendations. The Bureau is the sole focal institution for notifying ICAO on aircraft accidents and incidents in Ghana.
The bureau shall operate under Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau Act, 2020, Act 1028, the Aircraft Accident and Serious Incident Regulations, 2019 L.I. 2375 and the operational procedures specified in the Accident Prevention and Investigation Manual (APIM).
The Commissioner
John Mmeb Kunyan Wumborti
Born on August 20, 1972, in Tatindo, located in the Northern Region of Ghana, Mr. John Mmeb Kunyan Wumborti is an accomplished professional with extensive experience across multiple industries.
He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. With over sixteen years of expertise in investment banking, he currently serves as the Acting Commissioner of AIB Ghana. Prior to this, he was the Executive Director at TICMUSS LTD, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic acumen.
Before his transition to banking, Mr. Wumborti gained valuable experience in the insurance sector. He worked as a sales executive with Phoenix Insurance Company Limited and played a pivotal role in designing Ghana’s Micro Life Assurance Policy, subsequently becoming Branch Manager following his move into investment banking.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Wumborti dedicated a decade to teaching English Language and Literature in English at E.P. Secondary School, Saboba, in the Northern Region. He also taught part-time at Prince of Peace Girls Senior Secondary School in Kumasi while working with A.C. Nilson, a marketing research company. He is currently the Chief Executive of the Aircraft, Accident and Incident Investigative Bureau to help investigate, prevent, regulate and oversee the management of aircraft accidents and incidents that occur in Ghana
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Wumborti is a devoted family man who is married and blessed with three children
